Open the calculatorPlanning a new path, patio base or driveway pad? Indiana Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Carbon, IN, and we stock #53 stone as our standard base. Around here the ground is old lake-bed flat, silt and clay that drains slowly once it is stripped. That changes what you put under a path.
Fines and screenings make a Carbon walkway walkable, and the base material underneath holds it up. Order online and we deliver bulk loads across Clay County.
Bedding is what keeps a path in Carbon from sinking away. If you lay a fine surface straight onto bare silt, it works its way down and disappears. The fix is a compacted base first, then a thin, tight top layer you can actually walk on.
Start with stone screenings, also called screenings. These are the fines and small chips left from crushing, and they are the best bedding under pavers and flagstone. Screened and watered in, screenings lock up hard and give a flat, level surface with no loose stone rolling underfoot.
For the base under that, use #53 stone. It is the standard Indiana base. It packs hard and carries the load, so it belongs under a patio slab or a paver path, not on top.
On top, pick your surface to match the traffic. For a garden path or a walkway between beds, walkway gravel gives a finer, walkable finish. If you want a clean, single-size look and quick drainage, #8 stone is a common Indiana driveway and path topping, specified as size No. 8.
Where a path has to shed water rather than hold it, drain rock handles French drains, downspout runs and wet spots on flat ground. For a firmer, rounder surface around play areas, Natural Pea Gravel is a rounded, mostly uncrushed option.
The usual failure here is a base that is too thin. The silt and clay under Carbon is flat, old lake-bed ground that drains slowly, so water sits in the subgrade. A two-inch base over that gets pumped full of mud the first wet spring and the path sinks.
The fix is depth and compaction. Dig out the soft material, put down fabric if the ground stays wet, then build #53 stone in lifts and compact each one before the next. Screenings only go on top once the base is hard and level.
Winters are milder than northern Indiana, but repeated freeze-thaw still heaves gravel paths and softens wet subgrades. Footing depth is set by the county or city building department, so check before you dig. Low valley bottoms flood when the rivers run high, so build from late spring through fall once the water drops and the silt dries.
Bulk material is ordered two ways: by the ton or by the yard. A ton is weight, a yard is volume, and the two do not convert the same for every material. Stone is heavier per yard than topsoil or mulch, so a yard of #53 stone weighs more than a yard of screened topsoil.
For quantity, measure the area and the depth you want. Length times width times depth in feet, divided by 27, gives you cubic yards. Add a little for compaction, since stone settles as it packs. The site calculator does that math for you.
We deliver bulk loads to Carbon and across Clay County, including Brazil, Lewis, Clay City, Center Point and Cory. Tell us where the truck can back in and where you want the pile dropped. Keep the path clear and the load goes where you can shovel from it.
Run your path or pad dimensions through the calculator first, then order the #53 stone, screenings and surface material for the job. Indiana Rock Supply delivers bulk loads to Carbon and Clay County, and we will help you match the material to the ground you are building on. Place your order online when you are ready.
Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Carbon, IN
Have the drop spot marked and clear of vehicles, low wires and soft ground the truck could sink into. A bulk load needs a firm, level place to dump. If you have a tarp or a hard surface to dump onto, even better. Someone should be on site to point the driver to the exact spot, since a full load is hard to move once it is down.
Compacted #53 stone is the base, built in lifts over fabric if the silt stays wet, then stone screenings for the bedding layer that the pavers sit on. The #53 carries the load and sheds water; the screenings give you a flat, tight bed. Skipping the base and bedding straight into clay is what makes pavers sink and shift.
We would rather move a delivery than tear up your ground. If the site is too wet for the truck on the day, we will call you and rebook. Tell us in advance about any part of the approach that does not drain and we will plan around it.
