Beds cut into central till plain clay behave differently from beds in good loam, and mulch has to be handled accordingly. The ground here drains slowly, holds water through winter, then bakes hard and cracks in a humid July. Shredded mulch is bought to buffer both ends of that: a natural brown hardwood cover laid two to four inches deep, whose shreds knit together into a mat that shades the soil, slows evaporation between waterings and keeps weed seed in the dark.

The two spreading windows a central Indiana bed actually gets

Spring, once the clay has dried out. Mulching a saturated bed in March seals wet, cold soil under a blanket and keeps it that way, which is the opposite of what a newly planted shrub wants. Wait until the surface has dried and the soil has warmed, which on flat till usually means later than people expect.

Autumn, after the beds have been cut back. A cover going into winter moderates the soil temperature around roots through the freeze-thaw cycles that heave shallow plantings out of heavy ground. It has also had a season to settle by the time growth starts again.

The practical rule on this ground is to work when the soil is damp rather than wet. Clay walked on when saturated compacts, and a compacted bed undoes more than the mulch gains.

Getting clay beds ready before the load lands

Weed first, properly. A mat of mulch suppresses seed germination but does nothing to an established perennial weed, which will simply grow up through it.

Fix the edge. A cut edge or a set border is what keeps mulch in the bed and out of the lawn, and on clay a spade-cut trench edge holds its shape for a season.

Check the grade around the house. A bed that slopes toward the foundation is a problem mulch will hide rather than solve, and hiding it is worse than seeing it.

Beds, tree rings and bare slopes around the house and barn

Ornamental beds and borders. Two to four inches over the bare soil between shrubs, perennials and flowers. The shreds lie together and resist blowing and washing better than a chunkier material does.

Tree rings. A ring rather than a heap. Mulch piled against a trunk holds moisture on bark that wants to be dry, and the ring's real jobs are keeping a mower away from the base and holding moisture over the root zone.

Bare slopes. On a stripped bank or a newly graded face, a mulch cover holds raindrop impact off the soil and slows the run while seed establishes.

Play areas. Shredded hardwood is used as a soft surface under play equipment. Depths and fall protection for a particular piece of equipment come from the equipment manufacturer and whoever inspects the installation, not from a material page.

Three places mulch gets spread that want stone instead

A side-yard dog run. Organic material plus slow-draining clay plus constant traffic equals mud by the second wet season, and mulch breaks down into exactly that. An open stone surface over a prepared subgrade stays drainable and does not hold mess: #57 stone is the usual pick for a run.

A turnaround or parking pad. Nothing organic survives under tires. A pad wants a compacted #53 stone base with driveway stone over it, and mulch belongs only in the planted margins around it.

A French drain along a foundation. Mulch in a drainage trench is actively harmful. It holds water against the wall and it rots, so the trench closes up. The trench takes washed drain rock with an outlet, and mulch goes on the finished bed above it, held back a few inches from the siding so the wall can dry.

The pattern behind all three is the same. Mulch is a cover for soil that is growing something. Wherever the surface has to carry weight, stay drainable or move water, the answer is stone.

Cubic yards of shredded mulch for a border, rings and a slope

Hypothetical layouts, arithmetic shown. Length times width times depth in feet, divided by 27 for cubic yards. Mulch is ordered by the yard on this site, and the site's own published figure puts a yard at roughly 600 lb, or about 0.30 tons, so a few yards is a light load by weight and a large one by volume.

A foundation border, 42 feet long and 5 feet wide at 3 inches. 42 x 5 = 210 square feet. Three inches is 0.25 feet, so 210 x 0.25 = 52.5 cubic feet. Divided by 27 that is 1.9 cubic yards.

Four tree rings, each 6 feet across at 3 inches. A circle is 0.7854 times the diameter squared, so 0.7854 x 36 = 28.3 square feet each, or 113 square feet for four. 113 x 0.25 = 28.3 cubic feet, which is 1.0 cubic yard.

A bare slope, 30 feet by 12 feet at 3 inches. 30 x 12 = 360 square feet, and 360 x 0.25 = 90 cubic feet, or 3.3 cubic yards.

Those three together come to 6.2 cubic yards, roughly 1.9 tons. Run your own beds through the mulch calculator, which takes length and width in feet, depth in inches, a circle or up to five separate areas at once, and adds a 5 percent margin by default, which you can untick.

Topping up next year without burying the crowns

Measure what is there before you order again. A three inch layer laid last spring is rarely three inches this spring, because the lower part has broken down into the soil, which is the material doing its other job. Top up to the depth you want rather than adding a full layer on top of the old one.

Watch the total depth against the plants. Mulch accumulating year after year around crowns and trunks keeps them damp and buries the root flare, and on clay that already holds water, that is how a shrub gets into trouble.

To order, pick a delivery date on this page and then the number of yards, with delivery arranged from the ZIP code entered at checkout. Have somewhere firm and open for the truck to tip, because a mulch pile takes more room than the same weight of stone. If you would rather have the bed areas checked over before booking, send the measurements through the contact page.
