The usual first attempt on the northeast till plain is a few loads of soil tipped into the wet corner of the yard. On heavy clay and old lake plain ground east of Fort Wayne that never works, because the problem was never the level of the ground. It was that the water had nowhere to go. Drain rock is what gets bought second, once that has become obvious: washed stone from 3/4 inch up to an inch and a half, cleaned of fines so the spaces between the pieces stay open and water can move through them to an outlet.
Rounded or angular, and what a washed load looks like once it is down
Two forms arrive under the same name, and the choice is worth making deliberately.
Angular drain rock has crushed faces that key into each other, so it holds its shape under weight. That is the practical pick anywhere backfill is loaded, behind a retaining wall or against a foundation, because it stays open while carrying the soil behind it.
Rounded drain rock reads as natural stone. Where the drainage detail will be seen, along a visible swale or in a landscape feature, the rounded form looks like something that belongs rather than like construction material left exposed.
Both are washed, which is the specification that matters more than the shape. No dust, no clay coating, nothing to fill the voids. In the pile it looks clean and slightly gray, and in the hand it is dry rather than dusty.
The wet-ground jobs drain rock is built for on heavy northeast clay
French drains. The stone forms the free-draining core that collects water out of the surrounding soil and carries it along the trench to wherever the run discharges.
Footing and foundation drainage. A ring of washed stone around the footing takes groundwater away from the base of the wall rather than letting it stand against the block.
Retaining wall backfill. Water building behind a wall is a load the wall was probably not designed for. An open backfill zone gives it a path down to the drain at the base instead.
Septic and leach field drainage layers. Clean, uniform stone is what these systems are built on, though the layout and the depths come from whoever designed and permitted the system, not from a product page.
Three jobs where a washed stone is the wrong answer
A yard regrade. Filling a low spot with drain rock gives you an expensive sponge. The correct build is fill dirt to bring the grade up and shed water, screened topsoil over it for seed, and drain rock only in a trench underneath if the area needs a buried route out.
A culvert outlet or ditch lining. Three-quarter to inch-and-a-half stone will be carried away by the flow coming out of a culvert after a heavy rain. Bank and outlet armoring wants heavy stone sized for the flow, which is rip rap territory.
A rock garden or xeriscape bed where nothing is draining. If the surface is decorative rather than functional, you are paying for washing you do not need. Rounded river rock gives a better look for a bed, and the washed grade belongs underground where it earns the specification.
There is a fourth, worth stating once: drain rock without an outlet. The stone provides the route, not the destination. A bed with nowhere to discharge fills up and stays full, and on flat till that is the single most common way a drainage job fails.
How deep the stone goes, and why the trench depth is a different number
Trench depth is set by where the water is and where the outlet is, so it comes from fall and from what you are draining, not from a table. What you order is the stone volume inside that trench, which is width times the depth of stone times the length.
Two figures to keep separate. The pipe, where there is one, sits on a bedding layer and is covered over the crown. The stone above that is the collecting zone, and it is carried up the trench as far as the water you want to intercept. Cap it with soil so surface runoff is shed rather than funneled straight into the stone.
Everything is wrapped in filter fabric on clay ground. Fine particles migrating into the voids will close them within a few seasons, and a closed drain fails quietly, with the first sign being water back where it started one wet March.
Yards and tons for a rock garden bed, a footing run and a wet-spot trench
Hypothetical layouts, with the arithmetic shown. Length times width times depth in feet, divided by 27. Washed stone in this size range is not listed separately on the site's own weight figures, so the closest family, 3/4 inch crushed stone at about 2,800 lb per cubic yard or 1.40 tons per yard, is used here as an approximation.
A decorative bed, 14 feet by 9 feet at 3 inches. 14 x 9 = 126 square feet. Three inches is 0.25 feet, so 126 x 0.25 = 31.5 cubic feet. 31.5 divided by 27 = 1.2 cubic yards, roughly 1.6 tons.
A footing run, 44 feet long with an 18 inch trench and 14 inches of stone. 18 inches is 1.5 feet, so the trench floor is 44 x 1.5 = 66 square feet. Fourteen inches is 1.17 feet, giving 66 x 1.17 = 77 cubic feet, which is 2.9 cubic yards, about 4 tons.
A wet-spot trench, 55 feet long, 12 inches wide, 18 inches of stone. 55 x 1 x 1.5 = 82.5 cubic feet. Divided by 27 that is 3.1 cubic yards, roughly 4.3 tons.
Ordering it alongside the soil and cover that finish the job
Most drainage orders are two or three materials, not one. A trench takes the washed stone, then soil to cap it, then whatever surface goes back on top. The river rock calculator that this material is set up to use will handle several areas at once if the run has more than one section.
Choose a delivery date and a tonnage on this page. Delivery is arranged from the ZIP code entered at checkout, and the truck needs a firm standing with clear room overhead. On heavy clay in a wet spring, that means a hard surface rather than the lawn beside the trench. Details about access and dump spots are on the delivery page.
