Up in the dune and beach ridge country the ground is already sand for the first several feet, and the question people arrive with is almost never what 3/8" natural pea gravel is. It is whether to use it or a crushed stone for the area they are covering. That single decision sets everything that follows: how deep the layer goes, whether it needs an edge, what has to sit underneath it, and how often somebody will be raking it back off the lawn.

Rounded 3/8" natural pea gravel or crushed stone for a path on sand?

Rounded stone is comfortable and mobile. Crushed stone is firm and stays put. There is no third option, and every other difference follows from those two facts.

QuestionRounded gravelCrushed alternatives

DrainageFree draining between rounded piecesDepends on whether fines are in the grading

Pick rounded where people are on the ground, barefoot or playing or sitting. Pick crushed where people are on their feet and moving, or where wheels are involved. A path that has to take a wheelbarrow of firewood every winter wants walkway gravel, which is the crushed fine option. A path between beds that bare feet use in July wants this.

The color is worth a sentence. It is the color of the rock rather than a coating, and it runs across tans, creams, grays and browns with the odd red piece. That makes it forgiving next to brick, flagstone and timber, and it is why it reads as informal rather than installed.

Why does it wander, and what actually holds it?

Because the pieces are round, and round things roll. This is the single most common complaint about the material and it is entirely predictable.

Three things fix it, and they work together rather than instead of each other.

An edge on every open side. Steel, brick, set stone or timber, and set slightly proud of the surrounding grade so the gravel sits in a tray rather than perching on a plate. A bed with three edges and one open side will empty itself through the open side.

Sensible depth. Deeper is not better with rounded stone. Two to three inches over a prepared base is enough for a path or a ground cover, and a deeper layer just gives the surface more material to shift underfoot and more to migrate.

Water that is not crossing it. On the lake plain, wind moves bare loose sand and storm runoff moves anything on top of it. Keep downspout discharge and any concentrated flow off a gravel area rather than through it. On a slope, intercept the water above.

Can it carry a hot tub, or does something go underneath?

Something goes underneath, always, and for a hot tub that something is more than a gravel layer.

A filled tub is a serious concentrated load, and rounded gravel spreads load poorly because the pieces roll past each other instead of locking. The build that works is a compacted layer of #53 stone taken down to firm ground and compacted in lifts, with the pea gravel as a thin surface over it, or the tub sitting on a slab or frame and the gravel used around it. Confirm what the tub manufacturer requires, and check footing requirements with the local building department, since those figures are set locally rather than by any rule of thumb.

The same principle scales down. Under a path or a play area, two to three inches of gravel over three to four inches of compacted base, and on soft or wet ground a separation fabric between the two so the base does not migrate down into the subgrade. Straight onto sand, a gravel layer slowly disappears into the sand.

How much does a path, a foundation strip and a tub pad take?

Hypothetical layouts, worked here so you can follow the arithmetic. Length times width times depth, all in feet, divided by 27, gives cubic yards. The site publishes about 2,800 lb per cubic yard for 3/8 inch pea gravel, roughly 1.40 tons per cubic yard, so these tonnages are approximate.

A garden path, 52 feet by 3.5 feet at 2.5 inches. 52 x 3.5 = 182 square feet. Two and a half inches is 0.208 feet, so 182 x 0.208 = 37.9 cubic feet. 37.9 divided by 27 = 1.4 cubic yards, about 2.0 tons.

A gravel band along the house while a new lawn goes in, 46 feet by 2 feet at 3 inches. 46 x 2 = 92 square feet. Three inches is 0.25 feet, so 92 x 0.25 = 23 cubic feet. 23 divided by 27 = 0.9 cubic yards, roughly 1.2 tons. The band keeps roof splash off new seed and gives the water a strip to land on that is not turf.

A hot tub surround, 9 feet by 9 feet at 4 inches. 9 x 9 = 81 square feet. Four inches is 0.333 feet, so 81 x 0.333 = 27 cubic feet, which is exactly 1.0 cubic yard, about 1.4 tons. The compacted base under it is a separate and larger order.

The pea gravel calculator takes length and width in feet and depth in inches, handles a circle or up to five separate areas, and adds a 5 percent margin by default, which you can untick.

What needs to be ready when the load lands on sand ground?

Order by choosing a delivery date and then a quantity on this page. Delivery is arranged from your ZIP code at checkout, and the truck needs to reach the spot and raise a bed there.

On loose sandy ground, pick a dump spot the truck can leave again, on the firmest access you have rather than out in the yard. Have your edging in and your base compacted before the gravel arrives, because rounded stone spread over an unfinished base is stone you will be shoveling twice. Small rounded pieces also run off a tipping bed faster than crushed stone does, so a flat spot matters more here than it would for a coarse material.

If a bed shape needs turning into a quantity before you book, send the measurements through the contact page.
