The month to build a dry creek bed on the northeast till plain is the one right after you have watched where the water actually goes. Late winter and early spring show you the route, running across the flat, ponding on the old lake plain clay, backing up where nothing lets it out. By the time the ground has dried enough to dig in late spring, most people have forgotten the line it took. River rock is what finishes that route once it is cut, smooth rounded stone from one to three inches in tans, grays, browns and the occasional red, laid where the water will be seen moving.

That last row is the argument most people are having with themselves. Mulch has to be renewed and it washes out of a bed every time a downspout backs up. Rounded stone stops that particular chore. What it gives up is the soil benefit mulch brings, and the fact that you cannot easily change your mind once two yards of it are down.

Three jobs it gets bought for where something else fits better

A playground surface. A run of 22 by 24 feet at 4 inches is 528 square feet, and 528 x 0.333 = 176 cubic feet, or 6.5 cubic yards. That is a lot of one to three inch stone for a surface children fall onto. Smaller rounded pea gravel is the usual choice in a play area.

An RV or boat parking pad. 12 feet by 35 feet at 4 inches is 420 square feet, 420 x 0.333 = 140 cubic feet, or 5.2 cubic yards. Rounded stone will not lock together under a tire, so it pushes into ruts and ridges. #53 stone compacted under driveway stone holds a parking pad far better.

A long rural lane. 400 feet by 10 feet at 4 inches comes to 4,000 square feet, 4,000 x 0.333 = 1,333 cubic feet, which is 49.4 cubic yards. On top of the cost of moving that much stone, rounded pieces roll under traffic and migrate to the edges, which is precisely why lanes here are built with a dense graded material instead.

Where river rock belongs on heavy northeast clay

The flat ground east toward the old lake plain drains slowly and holds water near the surface for long stretches, and the tile network across this farmland exists for that reason. River rock does not drain that ground, but it finishes the routes you build to handle it.

A dry creek line takes runoff across a yard on a visible, stable path instead of letting it pick its own. A downspout run carries roof water out past the foundation and stops mulch washing over a patio every storm. A bed surface holds against splash and shade where mulch keeps disappearing. A pond or water feature edge covers the liner and softens the transition. And along a runoff line, the stone protects the soil under it from cutting.

In every one of those, the work happens before the stone arrives: decide where water leaves the area, cut the route to that point, and set a fabric or a filter layer under the stone so soil does not pump up into it.

How deep to go and how to measure an awkward shape

Two to three inches is the usual depth for a decorative bed or border, enough to cover the ground fully without showing fabric through the gaps. A channel that actually carries water goes deeper, three to four inches, and the larger pieces belong in the middle of the run where the flow concentrates. Laid depth is loose depth; rounded stone does not compact and is not supposed to, so what you spread is what you have.

For an odd shape, break it into rectangles and add them. An L-shaped border of 18 feet by 4 feet plus 9 feet by 4 feet is 72 plus 36 = 108 square feet. At 3 inches, 108 x 0.25 = 27 cubic feet, exactly 1.0 cubic yard. A straight border run of 72 feet by 3 feet at the same depth is 216 square feet, 216 x 0.25 = 54 cubic feet, or 2.0 cubic yards. This site publishes river rock at about 2,700 lb per cubic yard, roughly 1.35 tons per yard, so those two work out at approximately 1.35 tons and 2.7 tons.

Stone is sold by weight, so take your own figures to the river rock calculator. It will take a circle or up to five separate areas at once, which is the quick way through a bed that bends, and it adds 5 percent spare by default, which you can untick.

Getting a load to the bed rather than onto the lawn

Pick a delivery date on this page, then the quantity. Delivery is arranged from the ZIP code you enter at checkout, and the truck needs to reach the spot and have clear room above it to raise the bed. Choose a dump point on the drive rather than the lawn if the ground is still soft from a wet spring, and plan a wheelbarrow run to the bed. If you are unsure whether one to three inch stone or the larger size suits the scale of your run, compare it with large river rock or ask through the contact page before you order.
